Kushinagar is one of the main four Buddhist pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha. The other three are Lumbini (in Nepal), Bodh Gaya, and Sarnath. Today, Kushinagar is a much-frequented pilgrimage site for Buddhists, and temples have been constructed by Indian, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Thai, Burmese, South Korean, Tibetan and Japanese Buddhists, alongside the ruins of monasteries and stupas.
