Garlic Leaves Turning Yellow: Causes & Fixes

It is possible to find a garlic bulb in every dish despite its pungent and soil-like taste. The small rounded bulb shape is eaten 2lbs per year at least. Plus, 2/3 of garlic production around the world comes from China.

When it’s cooked, the flavor turns into a nutty feel. My personal opinion about garlic has tested negative for two reasons. First, the smell is horrible and anyone can notice it immediately, second, the supernatural myths about it are ridiculous.

Fun Fact: European society considers garlic as an ” evil eye” and it is believed that it scares away supernatural creatures such as devils, werewolves, and vampires. As that isn’t enough, garlic wards off vampires which I’m pretty sure you have encountered a lot of these kinds of scenes in Hollywood movies.

Why are my Garlic Leaves Turning Yellow?

The leaves of the garlic turn yellow for invisible problems in the ground and at times can be surface as well.

If the leaves turn yellow during the growing season which is too soon, the plant isn’t getting the necessary nutrition. Environmental issues are the major factor in the change of color.

The climate and sudden change of temperatures can be another reason to scratch your head for yellow leaves. Fungal diseases that don’t let the plant alone. Maybe the soil or the overwatering is the problem.

As you can see identifying the problem is way harder than the solution.

The Reasons Behind Garlic Leaves Turning Brown

Garlic Diseases

The research done at Cornell University, the branch of agriculture and life sciences stated that garlic can be a victim of several diseases such as white root, basal root, downy mildew, Botrytis Rot, and penicillium decay. Everything happens inside the roots and reacts to leaves by turning them yellow shade.

Due to poor soil, the insects start to gather all over the leaves and until you find the solution, they don’t seem to leave the garlic plant alone.

Poor Soil

Garlic is a plant that asks for neutral soil. With a long appliance of mineral fertilizers, garlics’ first reaction is by turning the leaves yellow, which slightly acidifies the layer of soil containing the roots, since some of the nutrients are hard to access through the root system. In this scenario, the plant uses leaf nutrients for development and growth.

Poor soil signals the leaves to turn yellow from the bottom and go gradually upwards.

Improper Watering

Both overwatering and underwatering cause the yellow leaves appearance. Uneven moisture is the only thing that garlic can’t stand. Once a week of watering will be fine and if you excess and make the soil wet, the water will clog the roots and the symptoms will be shown in the leaves.

The tip of the leaves usually is in the beginning stages and then gradually spreads all the way down.

Lack of Nutrients

If none of the above-mentioned causes aren’t the reason well, maybe you don’t take good care of the garlic plant.

Think twice when was the last time you added nutrients like magnesium, nitrogen, or potassium?

How To Prevent Garlic Plant Leaves From Turning Yellow?

Change the Planting Location to Get Rid of Diseases

Don’t you dare plant garlic in the same location where they suffered from pests and other diseases. The diseases are hard to get rid of soil once and for all.

Instead, find a location where they can get 6-8 hours of full sun every day. One week before, get the soil ready by combining it with nutrients and compost.

Store the garlic in dry and dark areas such as the basement or regular room between 60–65°F temperature.

Create a Watering Diary

water only once a week and for a better determination of whether the garlic needs watering, check the soil dryness. Water thoroughly for 1 or 1.5 inches deep in the soil.

Increase the watering frequency to twice a week if you use sandy soil and if the current soil is loamy or clay, as I said before, once a week is fine.

However, if the case is extreme yellow leaves water 4 times a week, remember they can tolerate overwatering to some point but not underwatering.

Consider adding an irrigation system in case you find it hard to keep up with watering schedule and water the garlic randomly.

Garlic Needs Well-prepared Soil

Before planting garlic, repot the soil with wood ash at a rate of 1 to 1.5 cups per 11 square feet. Be aware that ash applications should not be put together with mineral fertilizers.

Fertilizers are applied when re-plowing, actually a step before planting ash-tuber or vice versa, with a timeline of 2-2.5 months maybe more.

Dolomite powder or limestone can be used for deoxidation. In crop rotation, it is mandatory to apply an organic fertilizer under the previous organic fertilizer.

A Brief Recap

Garlic is supernatural creatures’ nightmare and human beings’ nightmare is the smell. However, we cannot let the taste and smell take over the health benefits that bring themselves.

The first stage of something going wrong is visible in the leaves which obviously leaves turn yellow. After identification of the problem, the solution becomes easier because you know what to do.

The reasons why the leaves turn yellow are basic, and the thumb rule are fungal diseases, lack of nutrients, excessive or not enough watering. Take good care of soil.
