What are Vines on Trees? – How do they harm trees?

There are some vines that really know how to look super cool on a tree but just like the villain of a movie, they don’t show their bad side, and in this case “the villain of the tree” is a quite bad one! If you stick to the fact that vines are, they are those dangling green leaves that appear in different trees.

When it comes to the damage that vines cause, they basically strangle the trees and they can cut the nutrition that a particular tree owns! Also, some super bad vines even block the sunlight from the tree and they interrupt the photosynthesis process! You can notice that they are bad, right? Well, let’s kill them!

How to Kill Vines on Trees?

Now that those who didn’t know what vines are and what they do are informed, I think that we should directly show the main answers to the question of this article. Let me mention some of the methods and things that you can do in order to kill vines on trees!

There are different ways and different methods, but still, the two main ones stand the mechanical or physical ones and the most famous one which is the chemical method. Both manners will help you get rid of vines easily, but there are some things that you need to know, or better say, I will mention to you in deeper detail the things that should be done so that I can ease the job for you!

Pulling Out

The easiest and the simplest method of getting rid of vines is by pulling them out with your hands. Still, a super important thing that I would like to mention about this method is that whenever you pull them out by your hands, you should have in mind to always wear gloves, as some vines tend to harm your skin. The basic example of vines that causes skin irritation would be English ivy.

From pulling them out with your hands, we go to another method which is cutting the vines away from your trees, and basically, it is also another method that is considered easy. You can use whatever tool you want in order to cut them.

Use Mulch

Mulch is a material that is put on the soil of any plant and it helps protect the plants and the roots of that particular plant. However, mulch is also used in “killing vines” as it completely blocks the growth, and considering the fact that vines need light, water, and air, you can be more than sure that mulch is a complete blockage of those three things.

Vinegar is a very powerful liquid, which includes acetic acid within. Even though it doesn’t kill people, you can be more than sure that vinegar will deal greatly with vines, without harming the tree in any way. That’s because trees are way stronger than vines in general.

Hot Water

Boiling water is another super easy thing to do in order to kill vines. It should be poured directly on the roots of the vines, and again, you should be more than sure that the water won’t cause any damage to the trees, of any type, because of the strong body of the tree. By the way, after pouring the water, it would be good if you use a shovel in order to take the roots completely out.

The main chemical method of killing vines, in fact, any kind of plant, is using herbicides. Still, there is a difference in killing vines since there are different kinds of herbicides. Considering that fact, the best herbicides that can be used to kill vines are triclopyr and glyphosate. If the roots of the vines are super-strong, you can use triclopyr, meanwhile, if they are not strong enough, glyphosate will do the job quite fine.

Final Words

Coming to the end of this article, you can notice that there are different things that you can do in order to kill vines, but still, the most assured method will still stay the use of herbicides, as there is no chance of new appearing vines. Anyways, taking them out from the roots would be a good thing to do as well but you should have in mind to not leave anything behind as vines grow super fast!

I really hope that this article will be your biggest helper for you guys, of course, if you are wondering how to kill vines on trees!
