How to Revive a Dying Avocado Tree?

Avocado is very rich in vitamins and is categorized as a member of the flowering plant because it grows on a tree.

When you realize this super healthy vegetable starts dying out of nowhere, so I just wanted to help you save the avocado.

The main reason why your avocado tree starts to die is probably because of watering, ambient issues, deficiency of nutrients, or any unknown disease.

The first thing you should look for is whether you are overwatering or underwatering the avocado tree. The second thing is perhaps the environment, which has nothing to do with you. If your current living place has drastic temperature changes such as hot and cold temperatures.

Ok, that’s good to know but even if you are not a professional gardener, you can still notice the problem by checking the signs. Avocados won’t die within a day, you have to consider the symptoms before it’s too late. It would be better to check occasionally since it doesn’t bring to the point where the avocado tree dies completely.

Check these symptoms to find out beforehand if there’s a problem with the avocado tree.

  • Change of Leaves– The leaves will start to turn brown and fall off more than usual.
  • Canopy Layer Leaves are Different in Color than the Rest– Canopy layer’s leaves are super pale green and the ends are brown.
  • Leaves Fall Easily– Brush the leaves gently with your fingers to figure it whether it’s going to fall or not. It shouldn’t fall that easy.
  • Environment- The healthiest environment for avocados is in moderately warm temperatures which are somewhere between 60°F to 85°F. It is really hard to blossom in high humidity.
  • Disease– maybe the problem is in the root, soil, or insects.

Just note that brown leaves don’t necessarily mean it’s about the disease. The sun damage and high temperatures during summer can be the reason why avocados don’t grow healthier and start to die.

Can You Bring to Life Dying Avocado?

Yes, of course, you can, but it depends on the level of damage. If it’s dried completely, there’s nothing you can do.

If you identify the root cause and use the appropriate remedy, dying avocado plants can be brought back to life. In relation to the problem, an avocado tree normally takes a few weeks or months to entirely die. Cut a little branch to check if there is any greenery within to verify if your avocado tree is still alive.

The process of removal is the greatest way to figure out what’s not going well with avocado trees. Once a possible problem has been ruled out, move on to the next.

The above-mentioned reasons can be in question, and sometimes due to the environmental temperatures, there’s nothing you can do, but change the location (if it’s possible).

How to Revive a Dying Avocado Tree?

1. Establish or Indicate the Problem

Checking the avocado tree every day is a key to telling if your tree is dying. If you didn’t take care or didn’t even check on it, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. When you finally realize it, it’s kind of too late.

If you can’t notice, but you feel like something’s wrong with the avocado tree, then leaving it to professionals’ hands can be the first step if you want to revive the tree. Proper care and early diagnosis are the keys.

2. Employ Gypsum

Gypsum is a sulfate mineral made of calcium sulfate dihydrate with chemical formulas. Mostly used as a fertilizer for food the plant avocado is one of them.

The ingredients inside wouldn’t allow spores to create diseases like fungi and many more, thanks to the rich calcium.

3. Apply Mulch

Applying mulch to the surface of the soil will help you prevent the avocado from dying. Open out mulch so as to extend the surface area of the tree. Cover entirely the base and tree.

Mulch will surely help the plant grow and avoid any possible bacteria or disease.

4. Overwatering or Underwatering

Watering is a serious issue, if you water either too much, or less, the avocado tree will start to show signs that are not doing well.

The avocado tree needs to be watered two to three times a week.

To notice whether you overwatered the avocado plant, check the leaves, if they are curly, ta-da you have found the problem.

5. Check the Drainage

Poor drainage can be responsible for the death of the avocado plant. Poor drainage will fasten the look of the root and leads to root rotting. To see if the root is rotten, dig a few inches until you see the root is falling apart and is kind of reddish in shade.

Dig the drainage around the roots, if you grow it in a pot, it will be easier for you.

6. Restore the Soil

Maybe the soil around the roots is diseased, replacing the soil can be a solution to your dying avocado.

7. Use Quality Fertilizer

Don’t forget to use fertilizer and balance the nutrition like nitrogen. Please invest in fertilizer otherwise don’t expect the avocado tree to blossom and be fruitful.

Use fertilizer like four times a year which is not too much. Start from the Winter season, so it can gain power and blossom at the right time.

A Brief Summary

Just as any plant, the avocado tree needs extra care. If you notice the issue in the earlier stages, most probably you can revive the avocado tree. Checking up on your plant at least once throughout the day will make you realize the changes and wouldn’t bring the avocado to the dying point.

After you identified what’s wrong with the tree, check if the drainage is poor, use quality fertilizer, and use gypsum and mulch. Be careful with overwatering or underwatering. Two to three times a week will be enough and change the soil four times a year.
