Pumpkins are the most loved plants that many people own and want to take care of them. I belong in that group as well, and that’s I really love planting pumpkins, and it is definitely a kind of therapy for me!
Something that shows the reason why pumpkins are highly preferred is the fact that they don’t need too many things in order to grow as healthy as possible. They basically require some of the main things that every plant needs, and they are considered super-simples. Among those main things is included fertilization as well, and pumpkins love to be fertilized, but they have their needs here as well!
In this article, I will be talking about the fertilization process in pumpkins as the main topic, while specifying some of the main things that you should know.
When to fertilize a pumpkin? How to fertilize a pumpkin? Which are the best fertilizers to use? If you stick until the end of this article, you will be able to find the answers to the questions that I mentioned and if you stick until the end, you will find out the main three fertilizers that can be used in pumpkin plants!
Now, let us see when and how the fertilization process should be done in pumpkins!
When to Fertilize Pumpkins?
Let me get this article started by firstly answering the main question which is when should one fertilize pumpkins! There is a specification that should definitely be mentioned!
A pumpkin should be fertilized three times a year, during the pre-flowering period, flowering period, and when the fruits are already there.
Considering the fact that pumpkins are autumn fruits the pre-flowering period is in late spring-early summer, the flowering period is mid-summer and early autumn, and the production of fruits is in the autumn. Basically, these are the times that you should fertilize pumpkins if you need it said in seasons.
How to Fertilize Pumpkins?
As I mentioned above, pumpkins should be fertilized based on some periods, and again, based on them, I will mention to you the ways how you can fertilize pumpkins!
The pre-flowering period is basically the period through which you plant pumpkin seeds, and after that, you should immediately fertilize.
During this period you can fertilize your pumpkins using any type of fertilizer, but what is important to mention is that at this time pumpkins need more nitrogen. You should have in mind to use a fertilizer that has a higher nitrogen percentage and apply it directly to the soil in which you have the seeds planted.
Once you see that your pumpkin plant has created its first flowers, it is important to wait a little bit until you see every seed during its flowering period.
Differing from the pre-flowering period, during this time you should be more concentrated on using a fertilizer that has more phosphorus in it because it provides the plant with more energy so that the pumpkins can appear and the plant completely will enter its last period.
Here goes the last period of a pumpkin plant, as the pumpkins start to appear. In order to ease your job and make the pumpkins ready to be harvested, fertilization is important here as well.
During the fruit period (because pumpkins are considered fruits), you should use fertilizers that own more potassium within. Potassium will help the pumpkins and will help their growth while providing them with strength.
Best Fertilizers for Pumpkins
Now we came to the most exciting part, the one that I mentioned at the beginning of this article, and here I will mention for you some of the best fertilizers that you can use in pumpkins! I have included three leading picks and it doesn’t mean that there are no others to use!
However, my choices are these:
1. Pumpkin Juice
Hence the name, this fertilizer is a liquid one that should be given to your pumpkins.
It comes in gallons and it includes 11% nitrogen, 8% phosphorus, and 5% potassium. Based on this fact, this fertilizer can be easily used during the pre-flowering period. Besides the main things that it should own, you will also find zinc, magnesium, iron, and boron, but they are at a smaller percentage.
Miracle-Gro always brings amazing fertilizers, and this one for pumpkins comes in granules, which is quite different from the one mentioned above.
The NPK ratio of this fertilizer is 7-6-9; meaning that it is more concentrated in potassium, having it at 9%, meanwhile, the nitrogen is 7% and phosphorus stands at 6%. It is a fertilizer that loves organic nutrients, and once in use, you will notice that the plant will grow easily.
3. Jobe’s Fertilizer Spikes
Another quite famous name in the world of fertilizers is Jobe’s, as it brings some of the greatest fertilizers for different plants. This fertilizer comes in spikes, and in one package you will find a total of 50 spikes.
The formula on this fertilizer is 2-7-4, and as you can clearly notice, it is different from the two other fertilizers that I mentioned above because it is more concrete about the phosphorus part, owning it at 7%.
Coming to the end of this article, I don’t think that I left something unmentioned, but still, as an overall opinion about the main topic, I would say that fertilization in pumpkins is an easy process but still having in mind its growing periods and the fertilizers that should be used, the process becomes even easier.
I really hope that this article will help you find out more about the fertilization of pumpkins, in case you need help, and I hope that the fertilizers that I mentioned above will be the best ones to use for your pumpkin plant!
Coming at the part of the advice, if you liked what you read in this article, I will gladly mention to you some other things that you may want to know!
